Although Roller Derby may seem intimidating, it isn’t! If you have the dedication (or addiction!!) to be a derby player, we will make sure that you get the training. We are a great support system and look forward to training with you.

We are always on the look out for new skaters to join our ranks. If you would like to give roller derby a go please get in touch with us.

Coaching

We will work with you regardless of your skating ability and we will create drills that focus on what everyone needs to work on. Fresh Meat are not allowed to be involved in any contact drills until they have satisfied a skills requirement.

To start with we will focus on agility, endurance and basic skills such as correct stance, stride, crossovers, falls and stops. Correct stretching techniques, warm ups and cool downs will be done on every session. We will then work up to more advanced techniques like transitions, lateral skating and pack work which will lead us up to blocking and hitting safely.

Roller Derby is a full contact sport, BUT we train you to fall safely. Injuries are not as frequent as you might think, but they do occur. This is not the Roller Derby of the past which was much more like pro-wrestling on skates. Illegal moves such as punching and tripping are not allowed. It is, however, a very aggressive, competitive sport!

You need to be prepared for the fact that the following things can happen!

  • BRUISES
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Broken bones

Now most of these can happen in any sport but honestly if you are really, really worried about hurting yourself this is probably not the sport for you. This is why correct protective equipment must be worn, any skater without this will not be allowed to skate, no exceptions!

All league members must pass something called minimum skills before being deemed safe to do bouts or any open scrimmages, this is a list of skills that are ticked off by other skaters from our league or other leagues around the country, it is a legal requirement to make sure everyone in that bout is experienced and safe to play. You will be given a minimum skills sheet on recruitment, have a read and give yourselves an idea of what is required of your skating ability.

Don't be intimidated or put off by all this, Roller Derby is a fun way to keep fit and we have good laugh! Enjoy it!

Equipment

Now you are ready to get yourself equipped and start coming to practice! Every skater on the track must have the following:

  • A pair of quad skates
  • Knee pads - we suggest buying a reputable brand of knee pads as cheap starter pack knee pads do not have enough cushioning and WILL lead to bruising when doing falling drills.
  • Elbow pads
  • Wrist Guards
  • Mouth Guard
  • Helmet

For Example a payment setup for 1st March will cover skating for the month of March. Non-payment of subscriptions will lead to grievance procedures and finally expulsion from the team.

Derby Name

Every derby girl is excited to pick their derby name! There is a master roster adhered to by every roller derby skater in the world. You can view this list at www.twoevils.org/rollergirls.

After you become voted in as a member, you can submit your name to the league secretary, who will submit it to the master roster. Please take your time; this is the name that you will have for the rest of your roller derby career.
